Ajman: Gulf Medical University (GMU), the academic flagship of Thumbay Group, has been ranked first in the world for International Outlook in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027.
GMU scored 99.4 for International Outlook, the highest score among 2,297 universities from 118 countries and territories assessed in the 2027 rankings. It also secured the top position in the UAE for the indicator.
The ranking marks GMU’s first entry into the ‘THE World University Rankings’. The university has been placed in the 1001–1200 band overall and is the only specialised medical and health sciences university in the UAE included in the 2027 edition.
THE’s International Outlook indicator assesses the international composition of a university’s student and staff populations, as well as the extent of international collaboration in its research. GMU said its campus has students from more than 115 nationalities and faculty members from 56 countries.
Prof. Manda Venkatramana, Chancellor of Gulf Medical University, said the ranking reflected the university’s international academic environment and its growing focus on research and academic performance.
“Entering THE’s World University Rankings for the first time and going straight to #1 in the world for International Outlook speaks a lot about who we are. Healthcare has no borders, and neither does education,” he said.
Prof. Ammar Almaaytah, Dean of Quality Assurance and Institutional Effectiveness at GMU, said the score reflected the university’s efforts to attract international students and faculty and develop research collaborations.
“A score of 99.4 is not luck. It is the result of years of deliberate work to recruit talent from around the world, build genuine international research collaborations and hold ourselves to global standards in everything we measure,” he said.
GMU offers programmes in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, physical therapy, biomedical sciences and healthcare management. Its students receive clinical training through Thumbay’s network of academic hospitals.
The university said the ranking further highlighted the UAE’s position as an international destination for health sciences education.
